Organising a Street Party Could Bring Your Community Closer

Published by admin under Parties

Organising a Street Party Could Bring Your Community CloserDo you feel that community spirit isn’t quite what it used to be? Perhaps you feel that your neighbours are worlds apart despite living in such close proximity. Well, do something about it.

If you want to regain that sense of community and neighbourly camaraderie, why not organise a street party? The perfect opportunity is about to arrive in the form of the Royal Wedding, giving your communal shindig some real credence.

There is a great tradition in Britain of social gatherings in the streets at times of special occasions, with recent examples such as the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and the wedding of Charles and Diana. With people living increasingly introvert lives, and detaching themselves from the society in which they live, the street party tradition is a fantastic way to reinvigorate the streets of Britain.

Though the Royal wedding of William and Kate provides a national occasion to excite en masse, there needn’t be such a grand reason for holding a street party. The birthday of a respected resident of the street, or a wedding anniversary of a well loved couple are as valuable occasions as any, and should be celebrated with appropriate gusto.

Of course, there is a long list of considerations to be taken into account throughout the planning process. The logistics and careful co-ordination of the event will determine the overall outcome of the party, with a failure to plan ahead posing serious risk to the success of the day.

Firstly, make sure to get the general consensus of your neighbours, and set a date well in advance to provide plenty planning time for yourself and neighbours. Frequent meetings amongst street dwellers are a must, as is the continual involvement of as many neighbours as possible.

Apart from gaining the commitment of the street, the most important aspect is the plan for the day itself: what is going to be happening? Whether you hope to offer music, dancing, play areas, or sporting activities, planning must start early, and a democracy of opinions must be sought. For many of these activities, equipment and power will be required, and such considerations should never be far from your mind. For example, such an easily overlooked thought as generator hire can make or break the success of the party.

Funding can be a real problem for organisers, especially for first time participants. Neighbours who are unsure of your motives or reliability will be reluctant to offer money, and if you are not able to cover the costs yourself it can become a struggle financially.

Some alternatives include gaining sponsorship from a charity, as street parties can be an effective way of raising money for charity. Another option is the organisation of raffles, with the money collected going towards the party costs.

Don’t let a lack of funds put you off though, the party needn’t cost a small fortune. After all, it’s all about the people, and the community at large, whose very acceptance of the invitation should be enough to make the whole day worthwhile.
