Sometimes It’s the Little Things That Get You
I know I have been talking a lot about water damaged homes and the benefits of a good house sitting service, I do have more stories that I will tell you later.
Now I want to tell you what happened to me and my family. It was October of 2004. We live in the San Bernardino national forest in Crestline California at about 5,000 feet in elevation. At about 1:00 am in the morning, our family was awakened by the sound of about five sirens going off at once. I knew that something big was going on so I put my clothes on and drove down into town. When I got to the main intersection there was a traffic cop directing traffic. I rolled down my car window and asked him what was going on? He told me that there was a forest fire approaching our village and that Crestline was being evacuated.
Talk about a rude awakening! I then drove home and told my wife and two boys that we had thirty minutes to grab our belongings and get out of town. We drove about forty miles to a hotel in Moreno Valley at about 3:00 am and spent the night there.
The next day we got up, ate breakfast and drove another 20 miles to my Brothers house. Thankfully Paul and his wife Karen agreed to let us stay there until the threat of fire had passed. We stayed at Paul’s house for close to two weeks when as we were watching television we got the word that the evacuation had been lifted and we could now go home.
It was sure nice of my brother and his family to put up with us for almost two weeks, but it sure was a great feeling to be going home and knowing that the fire had missed our home.
We were all very excited! We pulled into the driveway, got out of the car, unlocked the front door, walked into the house and the first syllables that came out of our mouths was PEEEYOUUU. Our house smelled like someone was murdered in our living room. We tracked the smell down. It was our refrigerator!
While we were gone the power company had cut off the power to our house. All of the food in our refrigerator had spoiled. What a mess! We cleaned out all the contents of the refrigerator and scrubbed it down with baking soda. We could not get that horrible smell out of our refrigerator for about two weeks. Most of our neighbors simply threw their refrigerators away and bought new ones. If we had the money we would have done the same thing.
What does this have to do with house sitting? You would be surprised at the number of people who own vacation homes who leave food in their refrigerators even when they only visit their homes every three months! That food does not stay fresh forever. You need to look at the expiration dates on the packaging and take the food with you or throw it out.
That is where a good house sitting service helps. If you leave your home and forget to check the refrigerator we got your back! Nothing is more embarrassing than bragging to your friends about how wonderful your mountain home is and upon entering your home you are met with a chorus of PEEYOU’S.
So inclusion the main point of this article is that you may think that you remembered everything but it’s so easy to forget the little things.
