The Multigenerational House, Coming to America?

Published by admin under Home-and-Family

Many European families live together in one house for generations, sometimes hundreds of years.

But American houses tend to wear out faster, maybe only lasting about 100 years before they start to fall apart.

But there are houses that, if built of sturdier materials could last through and shelter multiple generations of the same family.

It’s something you see in big cities. There are 3 story row houses all over the country.

Each floor has 1 bath, a kitchen, a family room, a bedroom or 2, and maybe a dining room.

An entire family, from grandparents, to adult children with kids, to adult grandkids can all live together in one building.

But there are other options, too.

A homeowner could live in 1 or 2 units and rent the other, or rent 2 to help pay the mortgage.

You could have a business on the ground floor and live above the store, reducing your expenses to a manageable level by using the same space as your business location and your home.

Best of all it could work almost anywhere in the country.

This kind building can adapt to changing circumstances and needs of families almost endlessly. An elderly parent might need the ground floor. A complicated pregnancy, handicapping injury, or other illness could make the ground floor important to other family members, too.

You could also create better accessibility with an elevator, too.

This kind of house could actually be handicapped accessible on 2 levels with earth sheltering in a basement that is accessible. An additional drive and entry to the second floor could make one house accessible on 2 levels.

Another advantage in a house like this is that it can have a small footprint and be built on a small lot and still have a lot of room for anything a family needs to do with the space.

The stacked living spaces are more efficient to heat and cool, too.

It’s one of those ideas whose time has come. With housing prices in free fall people or families could pool their incomes to meet the mortgage on one of those big old honking houses that went up all around the country.

A 5,000 square foot behemoth could easily shelter some single moms and kids, too. Many big homes that were built in the late 19th century or early 20th century ended up being turned into rental apartments.

It’s a good time to bring more practicality in shelter and in all living arrangements. Maintaining closeness is good for families. Buying a home or building that can shelter multiple generations of one family, or a family and a business, or a family or homeowner who has rental income all make life more financially secure.

A home that shelters you and yours is great old way to look at housing that is new again. If you also use it to produce income from a business or rental income it can revolutionize housing and home ownership for singles and for families, too.

A house could be more than just a home for 2 or 3 people. It could shelter generations of one family or lots of little families or a homeowner and a business. It’s a long tradition and a good one.

5 Tips For an Organic Home Life

Published by admin under Home-and-Family

Being organic is a life decision and may take some time to filter through to every part of your life. However the home is probably the best place you can start to practice your new organic life. Here are 5 tips to get you started.

1. Shop at an organic Only store:

If you shop at a store that only stocks organic goods then you will have much less chance to break and go for a cheaper non-organic option. At the same time you will find a plethora of items you may not have thought of. This will make it easier for you to achieve your goal of living the organic life style. You will also find it less tempting to pick up items you are really wanting to avoid.

2. Grow your own organic good:

Growing food is a great hobby and probably the best way to ensure your food is 100% organic. You can buy organic seeds and plant food from the garden store. I have heard that the potency of fruits and vegetables start to deteriorate the longer they are off the vine. So to get the most benefit and nutritional value from your fruits and vegetables eat them as soon after picking them as possible. By doing so you will realize the maximum benefit they have to offer.

3. Remember that clothing often comes from organic matter too:

Your cotton pants and shirts are all originated from cotton plants. If you really want to go organic then you should remember these things too! Organic comes in many forms and shapes we often neglect. Take some time to learn what an organic lifestyle really means, and how it can benefit you.

4. Make sure your dry ingredients are organic too:

Most people forget that things in cans and packets can be organic too. Many popular brands offer organic options so it shouldn’t be a problem. It is obviously up to you the individual as to how organic you want to become. It is after all your life.

5. Start composting your organic waste:

If you start a compost in your garden or a worm compost in your apartment then you can create your own plant food and fuel a whole organic cycle. This is perhaps one of the most misunderstood aspects of being organic. But when you think about it this makes a lot of sense. You are not only helping get the most benefit for your garden, but you are also helping the planet by reducing the amount of waste you put out. Again a win – win for us and the planet.

It may seem daunting when you look at what is involved. Just like with anything it is best to take small baby steps to get going. With every step you take you get closer to helping yourself, others and ultimately the planet. So start out small, eat an organic salad every day, then add to that with a fresh organic fruit every day, keep adding and soon you will be living the organic life.
